I’m so glad I get to visit so many of the gorgeous homes and their gardens in and around San Diego. I toured the Spanish-style landscape of a home in Del Mar Mesa filled with inspiration and wrote about it for Coastal San Diego Estates & Homes. Oh, to enjoy a balmy summer evening in the sunken custom fireplace space, to walk under three 12-foot high wrought iron arches to arrive at the 53-foot-by-54-foot infinity pool with its fire bowls filled with blue glass, and then to hang out and watch a movie playing on a screen built into a wall of succulents under the night sky—warmed by yet another fire pit. How SoCal is this!

The first night of Chanukah begins at sundown on Sunday, Dec. 22. My friends know I detest beets so they’ll have to pick up their jaws from the floor when I emphasize how much I love Garden Kitchen chef/owner Coral Fodor Strong’s Beet Stem Marmalade. She generously gave me the recipe for that, as well as those for her Radish Leaf and Pipian Pesto, and her easy-to-make and truly delicious whole wheat bread that she grills to use as a delivery system for the two dips. I’ve got the recipes for all of them in my new story for the UT’s food section. They’re perfect to serve at holiday gatherings or give as gifts! As always, so thrilled with the photos by my friend, Eduardo Contreras!

When you’ve found the perfect site with the potential for gorgeous ocean vistas, you do what Bill and Pam Heidler did: buy it! The Heidlers turned an old single story ranch house on a double lot in Encinitas into a two-story modern Craftsman that now boasts panoramic views of the Pacific and the ability to allow them to stay in the house as they get older. It was fascinating to learn from the Heidlers and their friend and architect Kristin von Zweck how they accomplished this. My new story in the December 2019 issue of Coastal San Diego Homes & Estates reveals the details.
