Smithfield is notorious in Virginia, where I’m from, for singlehandedly poisoning and killing the Pagan River. Even though the river was “dead,” the company got away with only a slap on the wrist because of their substantial political campaign contributions to the right-wingers who dominated Virginia politics and the Congress in the ’90s. Terrible people — I’ve boycotted them for years! I suspect they hid the swine flu outbreak they were probably instrumental in causing.
